There are three main blood cell types in the human body: white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. All of these are made primarily in the bone marrow from stem cells known as hematopoietic stem cells. This process can be disrupted at many different possible points, leading to a variety of diseases and disorders. For example:

• Aplastic Anemia: Exposure to certain drugs, radiation or toxins can halt the production of red and white blood cells, a condition known as aplastic anemia. 

• Thrombocytopenia: This condition can result if similar assaults stop the production of platelets.

•  Leukemias: These conditions are the result of abnormally high production of white blood cells.

•  Lymphomas: These cancers involve abnormal production of white blood cell types known as B cells or T cells.

• Immune Deficiencies: Primary immune deficiencies occur when there is defective production of white blood cells due to a genetic defect.
